TERRE HAUTE, Ind (WTWO/WAWV) – With the start of a new year the Terre Haute City Council elects new leadership and new members take their seat.
In November, Terre Haute voters elected two new members to the city council.
Winning an At-Large seat was Democrat Tammy Boland, whose first meeting on the council was Thursday.
“It’s exciting. The political part of it is over, the public service part of it begins and that’s what I’m looking forward to,” Boland said.
Boland who also works for the company Elanco says while she believes big things are on the horizon for Terre Haute, she doesn’t want to forget the small things that matter to her community.
“Neighbors are concerned about sidewalks, and streets, and lighting and those things are big issues when you live in a community,” Boland said.
Also in their first meeting on Thursday is Democrat Cheryl Loudermilk of Terre Haute’s 3rd District.
Loudermilk currently serves as the Vigo County Chief Deputy Auditor and she hopes her experience translates to the council.
“I do the budgets for the county. So I work with all the state departments and so as far as financing and how government works is where my background comes from,” Loudermilk said.
Loudermilk says although having some experience in goverment, she’s excited to learn more from the city council.
“I am looking forward to serving with the rest of the council, learning from the rest of the council that’s been on here for a while. I’m excited about what’s taking place in the community and happy to be a part of this,” Loudermilk said.
George Azar who is serving his sixth term was also elected president replacing Martha Crossen.
Earl Elliott is now the council’s vice president, a role that was held by Azar last year.
Boland and Loudermilk are filling the former seats of Don Morris and Karrum Nasser.
