TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College Sprint Football team will play its home games at West Vigo High School this fall.
The Vigo County School Board and SMWC came to this agreement at a board meeting Monday night.
This is history for the newly assembled team. Head Coach Blaine Powell expressed his excitement about finally having a home ball field.
“We’re just happy to have a home,” Powell said. “We’ve been excited about the opportunity to be over there.”
Sprint Football is nearly identical to regular football. The only difference between the two is that Sprint Football has a 178-pound weight limit for players. The 50-man team of freshmen will arrive on campus in the fall. SMWC Vice President for Enrollment Management Brennan Randolph said that the campus is excited to welcome this new team.
“It’s definitely creating a buzz on campus,” Randolph said. “It’ll have an impact on enrollment and it’ll have an impact on student life.”
There’s a significance behind WVHS being the setting for the team with the school basically being in the backyard of SMWC. Randolph said that the two have kept a strong relationship in the past, and expects that to continue.
“We’ve always had a close partnership,” Randolph stated. “This will just solidify our partnership in deeper ways and more on the athletic side.”
Randolph continued by saying that the new team could help attract more student-athletes to the school.
The inaugural game for the team will be on September 17th at Calumet College of Saint Joseph. The Pomeroys will hold their home opener at West Vigo the following week on September 24th.
