TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Tuesday, July 26th kicks off Week 7 of the Journey of Hope which raises money for people with disabilities.
Over the last 35 years the Journey of Hope has been taken place every summer. It’s an effort put on by a non profit organization called the Ability Experience, which is owned and operated by the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity.
Two teams of cyclists from the fraternity travel two different routes. One group starts in Seattle, the other in San Francisco with the ultimate destination of Washington D.C.
Indiana State University graduate Neil Jones said it has been a great experience helping people.
“Just be accepting and empathetic of people from all different kinds of backgrounds and abilities. It’s just really motivating and very driving to be able to be a positive ray of light for a lot of people,” Jones said.
The cyclists stopped at Happiness Bag in Terre Haute for a friendship event. The cyclists spent time with Happiness Bag participants by enjoying different activities and having dinner.
Cyclist Steven Wang said it’s a privilege to be in Terre Haute.
“Everyday is a little different, I heard we’re doing a karaoke tonight. So, really excited about that. Never really done something like this before I started and it is truly a privilege to be here,” Wang said.
