KNOX CO, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Across 500-plus acres of parks in Knox County, playground equipment for children with special needs and disabilities is limited. A problem seen by officials and the inspiration of Knox County Parke and Recreation Department’s latest five-year plan.
The solution? Building an all-inclusive playground.
“It’s an urgent need. I feel like in this size community, that’s something we’re sorely lacking,” Superintendent, Rhonda Foster said.
A new disability-friendly playground made of recycled material will have wheelchair accessibility. Swings, teeter-totter, water feature and music simulation area will be ADA compliant. Foster said the ground will be surfaced with high-end padding in case of an accident.
“I have an employee here with kids with special needs. It’s very unfortunate that we can’t them play along with the rest [because of the equipment,] She added.
The playground will be built at the Ouabache Trails Park where an existing playground is. The project will cost between $250,000 and $350,000. Leaders are looking into several grants and the park has requested $1.75 million in American Rescue Plan Act money.
This new initiative is welcomed news for the nonprofit company, Knox County Association for Remarkable Citizens, or KCARC. The organization provides services for residents of all ages with special needs.
Director of Children’s Services, Jessica Corrie, said it’s important parents have several options where kids can play safely.
“Providing this opportunity for these kids so they can play with their peers. They can build their confidence, they build that social and emotional needs and know they can have fun,” Corrie said.
If the park receives its requested amount of ARPA funds, construction could start this upcoming spring. The money will address the playground, park infrastructure improvements and beautification.
Foster adds she’d like to add these features to Hillcrest Park.
“I want them to have the same opportunity to play as any other child,” She stated.
