TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Terre Haute Fire Department welcomed 11 new firefighters to its force today and mayor Duke Bennett was there to swear in the new recruits.
Fire chief Bill Berry says over the next few months they’ll go through a rigorous fire training academy. The recruits will also be working on receiving an EMT certification. Berry discussed what he believes calls people to become a firefighter.
“The love of wanting to help somebody, the passion of wanting to help somebody, wanting to protect their lives, wanting to protect people’s property, I mean, that’s what being a firefighter is all about,” Berry said.
Berry also said that the EMT certification is important because so much of what they do is respond on EMS runs.
