TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — In honor of Black History Month, on Friday, Sarah Scott Middle School put on an immersive simulation for its students.
The goal of the simulation was to show the journey from slavery to freedom through the underground railroad.
The lesson incorporated local landmarks along the underground railroad such as the historic Allen chapel. There was a discussion after the simulation to help students process the experience and organizers were impressed by the students’ discussion.
“Just so inquisitive and wanting to learn so many things and so, once given that opportunity and they’re able to express what they were able just to go through, is an amazing experience, so it was great to hear the feedback that they had,” Nichelle Campbell-Miller, school social worker said. “It was great to sit down and listen to them process.”
Campbell-Miller said she enjoys being able to give students a learning experience beyond the textbooks.
