TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A groundbreaking that took place on Monday marked the beginning of a project to restore the historic Rea Park clubhouse.
The groundbreaking is phase one of an effort to renovate Rea Park, which is owned by the city. Mike Harding, the President of the organization Friends of Rea Park, noted that the Terre Haute Parks and Recreation board has embraced the idea of making Rea Park more than a golf course.
There are plans for a walking path, tennis courts, and more. The goal is to use Rea Park to help promote healthy and active lifestyles, and Harding said the park has a clubhouse like none other.
“This is one of those buildings, it’s like the courthouse,” Harding explained. “You don’t want to get rid of it. It’s too valuable. It means too much to too many people and has seen too many generations of Terre Hauteans grow up here.”
Harding said about $700,000, has been raised for the effort but the goal is to raise $1 million, so the fundraising efforts will continue.
