VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — When a storm last summer caused a lot of tree debris in the area, local officials saw that residents needed a way to get rid of yard waste.
That’s why the Vigo County Solid Waste Management District is starting a new composting program that will begin this summer.
Vigo County residents will be able to dispose of yard waste. The service will also work with dining halls, colleges and restaurants to collect food waste. Overall, the project is expected to divert 150 tons away from the landfill.
Also on Monday, the district opened an additional location for single-stream recycling. It’s located at the Vigo County South Highway Garage in the Industrial Park.
“[We] had a lot of demand for the south location,” Karrum Nasser, Executive Director of Vigo County Solid Waste Management District said. “I mean, currently we have a location for the north part of our county, the central part of our county, as well as West Terre Haute, so we felt like to help make recycling as easy and accessible as possible we needed to add a south location.”
The district now has a total of four single-stream recycling locations. The new south location will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Glass is not being accepted at this time at the new location, but the center expects that to change around the beginning of June.
