SEELYVILLE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Several residents have been dealing with brown water coming from their line.
Carrie Martinez and her family moved to Seelyville in 2019. She says they have had problems with the water color in the past as well. This time, others have started to complain.
“They told us that it’s on our line, on our end of the service line, but then after so many other people have complained, we realized it’s not our pipes,” Martinez said. “They’ve told people it’s because it rained too much or people are filling up their pools. That’s the excuses that they’ve had.”
The town is currently working to fix the issue in the midst of the backlash. Town board president John Hendrix says the water is safe to drink.
“While it does look unsightly, the safety level as far as meaning there’s no bacteria in the water, that’s what we are trying to get at,” Hendrix said. “Bacteria wise, there’s no bacteria in the water that’s going to cause anybody to get sick. The brown that they notice in the water is essentially the iron deposits that the water picks up as it goes through the mains.”
Seelyville must send water samples to a third-party lab each month. Despite this, residents are still electing to not use the water. Hendrix cited the color coming from iron in the water.
The city is in the process of moving affected customers to a new line because the current one they are on cannot be flushed.
