TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – The Terre Haute community lined the streets of Wabash Avenue Monday for this year’s Labor Day Parade.
The event is a celebration of workers and unions in the local area.
One member of Plumbers and Steamfitter 157 said this allows people to become educated on what businesses actually do.
It helps the community understand what the construction industry actually does. We keep their lights on. We keep their refiners running from gasoline. We provide everyday necessities for people.
Carter Crouch – Plumbers and Steamfitters 157
Along with kids getting their fill of free candy, the parade celebrates the accomplishments of laborers from the past year. A member of the Laborers International Union of North America said they don’t often get time to stand back and acknowledge the work that has been done.
Today we celebrate our accomplishments throughout the year. It’s a day to recognize what you’ve done, your achievements.
Joe Bolk – Laborers International Union of North America
The city of Terre Haute holds this parade every year on the holiday, but Bolk says this year is unique.
This year is different, it’s unique because we are so busy, I haven’t seen a lot of these people. I said that’s a good thing, when I don’t see you, you’re working.
Joe Bolk
The parade started at North 11th and Wabash and ended at Fairbanks Park, where celebrations were had with a free bean dinner.
