TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Vigo County CEO is a community-based program that is an extension of the classroom through the Vigo County School Corporation.
These students receive 2 credits per semester while getting the chance to learn and have class in different spaces including local businesses. Its facilitator Teri Bennett said that these classes teach these students how to be professional and operate in the business world.
“A lot of them were shy, quirky, and a little backwards,” said Bennett. “Now they can go out and shake somebody’s hand with confidence, strike up a conversation, and pitch a business. They seem like they have really matured and grown in an incredible way.”
Bennett says the Terre Haute community has so many resources and programs that allow small and local businesses to thrive. She said that she hopes the experience of being out in the community helps these students realize that there is plenty of room to shine in Terre Haute.
“It does attract students to want to stay here,” said Bennett. “They get to see that there is more to Terre Haute then they might think as a lot of students say that there isn’t a whole lot here and I can’t wait to leave Terre Haute. The program really wants students to open their eyes to what the community is and keep them here, because they don’t want them to leave Terre Haute.”
This program takes place during a student’s senior year of high school. Any student that is interested in joining has to apply during their junior year.
