TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— Vigo County Sheriff’s Office transplanted a memorial tree for a fallen officer from nearly 24 years ago to their new facility Wednesday.
According to a Facebook post, the previous Vigo County Sheriff’s Office is set to be demolished soon and in honor of a fallen officer from November 28, 2000, they transplanted the tree planted in his honor to the new facility. The post says this is just another way that they hope to honor the late officer’s memory and thanked the Vigo County Commissioners for their help in the process.
The fallen officer in question was Correctional Officer Aaron Schoffstall. According to the Officer Down Memorial Page website, Officer Schoffstall was on his way to work with another uniformed officer when they noticed an accident on State Road 63 and stopped to investigate. The page goes on to say that during the investigation Officer Schoffstall fell over the railing 33 feet to the pavement below. Weather at the time was snowy and caused the bridge to be icy at the time. Officer Schoffstall was 24 years old at the time of his death and had served the Office for four years.
