JASONVILLE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Three local communities remain without water after a fire at the Jasonville water plant.
Over 5,000 customers remain without water in Jasonville, Coalmont, and Hymera. Each community has water stations set up for people to pick up water or call for a delivery. Jasonville Mayor Eric Siepman says they have plenty of potable and drinking water.
“We’ve been delivering to citizens who are unable to get out,” Siepman said. “We’ve had semi loads of water delivered to Coalmont, which we also service. Right now we’re doing really well, I just look forward to us getting back to operational with our water plant.”
Until the plant is operational, Metropolitan School District of Shakamak superintendent Jeff Gambill says they will resort to e-learning, with each student using a Chromebook provided by the school.
“Our teachers are experienced at doing e-learning with COVID,” Gambill said. “We’ve had this situation here before, where the water was out due to an accident, so our teachers are experienced at that and they do a really good job of conducting a virtual classroom. We’ll keep doing that until this problem is resolved.”
Mayor Siepman says he appreciates all of the outside help that the community has received. An official timetable for repair is still unknown.
“I really feel like a few more days, we’ll be back up and it will be business as usual,” Siepman said. “Again, we’re still a year and a half out from being fully operational with our new plant, but we will have water, hopefully by week’s end, so fingers crossed, that’s the goal. If we don’t have water by Monday, I won’t be a happy mayor, let’s say that. But that’s the target.”
There is still no word on the cause of the fire at the water treatment plant, but the state fire marshal’s office is investigating.
