TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— The Terre Haute Fire Department held a demonstration on Tuesday of what could happen If you let a natural Christmas tree dry out.
Terre Haute Fire Department’s Public Information Officer Nick Arnold said your tree could burn up if not properly cared for.
“It is very important to have your tree watered properly,” said Arnold. “Make sure the reservoir every morning and if the needles are falling off the tree, it is time to take it outside.”
Arnold said this nightmare can happen too fast for residents to rescue themselves.
“If possible, use the fire extinguisher that you should have in your home and try and extinguish the fire,” said Arnold. “However, always call 9-1-1. Always call the fire department even if you think you got it out, we will come check it out for you.”
Arnold said that doing the little things like keeping the tree away from any heat source can save your life and your family.
“It is also important to make sure that I you have lights on your tree that wires are not frayed, there are no broken bulbs, and make sure that it is at least three feet away from any kind of heat source including candles, fireplaces, and any space heaters,” said Arnold.
Arnold added that the easiest way to prevent this other than watering the tree, is to double check every decoration you plan to put on the tree before hanging them up.
