EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— A 51-year-old resident of Evansville is going back to federal prison for more than 16 years after shooting an ex-girlfriend.
Ronald Jeremy McCallister was sentenced to 200 months in prison and five years of supervised release after a guilty plea of possession of a firearm by a previously convicted felon. McCallister’s record is long and includes multiple felony convictions including domestic battery, robbery resulting in bodily injury, battery by means of a deadly weapon, and armed robbery.
“We have prioritized federal prosecution of armed domestic abusers because of the extreme danger they pose to those in their homes and the public at large,” said Zachary A. Myers, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana.
According to court documents, on August 23rd of 2023 officers from the Evansville Police Department arrived for a call of shots fired at a home in town stating a woman had been shot by her ex. When officers arrived they found a woman in the backyard near a tent who had been shot in the ankle. According to the news release she had told officers she’d received suicidal messages from her ex and had come to check on him and offer support and knew he’d been staying in a tent in the backyard of a home in Evansville.
However, when she started speaking with McCallister the talking quickly led to an argument. At that point, McCallister grabbed a 9mm and placed it near the woman’s head. McCallister then fired a round near her face and then shot her in the ankle.
After this McCallister retreated inside the home where officers found him hiding in a bedroom with a loaded gun.
“It unfortunately bears repeating that we all deserve to be safest with our closest partners, but for too many that is not the case,” stated Daryl S. McCormick, Special Agent in Charge of ATF’s Columbus Field Division. “ATF will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to investigate and prosecute domestic abusers who possess firearms to ensure our communities are safe from these offenders.”
