WABASH VALLEY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Residents, and maybe even you, are getting prepared for the winter weather.
With snow in the forecast, local businesses have seen residents stockpiling essential needs, in case they aren’t able to travel.
Marketing Manager for Baesler’s Market, Kristine O’Hare, says the increase is very visible.
“Definitely the classics: milk, bread, and eggs”, O’Hare said. “Also, lots of salt for sidewalks and porches.”
Medley’s Hardware in Sullivan says they’ve seen the biggest increase in propane sales. Owner Tim Medley says they had to get a refill on their 1,000-gallon propane tank.
“Our sales in filling propane tanks, of all sizes, getting ready for the winter weather and for backup heat”, Medley said. “They’re for supplemental heat. They can heat their garages, there are tanks that go on those, or they have heaters that they can plum them to for emergencies.”
Along with items to keep warm, Medley says they have been almost cleaned out of snow and ice equipment.
“We are almost running out of heaters, as well as snow shovels and ice melt”, Medley said. “We’ve been hit pretty hard these last few days.”
Despite the increase in certain items flying off the shelves, both businesses agree that preparation is important.
“It is important to prepare, if we do get the weather that they say we are going to be getting”, O’Hare said. “We encourage people to come out today or tomorrow and get their shopping done.”
Following the storm, residents will need to be on the lookout for extremely cold temperatures.
