TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — An inmate has died after an assault at the United States Penitentiary (USP) in Terre Haute.
According to a media release, the assault happened on Monday, January 6, at approximately 7:30 p.m.
The release states, “Responding employees initiated life-saving measures. Emergency medical services (EMS) were requested while life-saving efforts continued.”
54-year-old Charles Lee Smoot was pronounced dead by EMS personnel. A second individual was medically assessed and treated for minor injuries at the facility.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has been notified.
No employees or other incarcerated individuals were injured and at no time was the public in
danger.
The release states, “Mr. Smoot was a 54-year-old male sentenced in the District of Columbia to an aggregate 96-month sentence for Bank Robbery and a Supervised Release Violation. He had been in custody at USP Terre Haute since September 25, 2024.”
USP Terre Haute is a high-security facility.
