TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A local doctor who was shot in the forearm wrestled a gun away from his attacker and held him until deputies arrived, court records state.
A probable cause affidavit released Thursday states that Andre Uche Obua, 28, of Miami, is now charged with attempted murder, battery with a deadly weapon, criminal recklessness, burglary, and strangulation.
According to court documents, the incident began as Doctor Manish Gera pulled his Tesla into his garage in the Richland Manor neighborhood. Gera spotted someone following him but thought it was a food delivery service. Gera then heard a loud bang, believed it to be a gunshot, and tried to close his garage.
However, the suspect got inside the garage before the door closed, pulled out a pistol, and fired at Gera who “threw his hands up and thrashed his body in an attempt to avoid being struck.”
Documents state that Gera was shot in the arm and that Obua left the garage, went back to his vehicle, and grabbed a long gun. Although he was injured Gera got out of his vehicle and began fighting to get the gun away from Obua. Then, Obua slipped and fell.
While on the ground Obua choked Gera who “struck the male in the genitals,” which caused the suspect to release his grip, documents state.
Gera then held the suspect on the ground until deputies arrived and arrested him.
During the fight, Gera asked the suspect what this was about and the man said, “scam.” Gera later told investigators he had no idea what the suspect was talking about.
After he was arrested Obua was treated at a local hospital. While he was there he spoke with a nurse and told her that there was a “multimillion-dollar money scam going on between a couple of doctors in the same office as the victim,” court records state. “He made reference to the CEO that was shot and killed most recently in New York City and stated that this situation was very similar.”
He added that he followed Gera from his office to his home.
Obua is being held in the Viga County Jail. He does not yet have a court date.
