PARIS, Ill. (WTWO/WAWV) — Horizon Heath, in Paris, Illinois has a new president and CEO.
At the end of 2024, Ollie Smith retired from the position after 40 years of service to the organization.
Taking his place is Jay Carmichael.
He’s originally from South Georgia, where he served as the COO of the Southwell Health System.
That’s a large, not-for-profit organization, made up of two hospitals and dozens of clinics.
He ran day-to-day operations and said he will use those skills to oversee Horizon Health.
Carmichael wants to become accustomed to his new team before evaluating future growth.
“In the near future, it’s about trying to get familiar with the organization and understanding where there are challenges”, Carmichael said. “I think really ingraining myself in the culture is going to be the near-term goal. From a long-term perspective, I think rural health care is faced with a significant crisis across the country. Really evaluating some of our expenses, evaluating some of our growth opportunities and figuring out where, and what, communities need our services. Then taking them to those communities.”
Carmichael said he envisions Horizon Health upholding the motto: “Big enough to serve you, but small enough to know you.”
