HENDERSON, Ky (WEHT) – Two people have been charged with burglary after a community member reported possible trespassing at the former Peabody Coal Mine.
The Wabash County Sheriff’s Office says the resident called the sheriff’s office at 8:36 a.m. Wednesday. Officials say a 2008 white Chevrolet Tahoe was parked inside one of the buildings behind the locked gate.
The driver was taken into custody and an investigation was started. The driver was later identified as 46-year-old Tara Cottrill of Centralia.
Officials say evidence of burglary, theft, criminal damage to property, criminal trespass, possession of burglary tools and possession of meth was found.
Officials thought two other people were in the area, so a drone was deployed. As a result, Mt. Carmel Police responded, and a K9 was also deployed.
Search efforts were later terminated.
Officials state later that afternoon, another community member reported a man walking towards Keensburg. The man claimed he had been hiking but didn’t know where his group went.
Officials say the man was dirty and advised he was from Odin. The man was identified as 30-year-old Kyle Hall.
Both Cottrill and Hall were booked into the Wabash County Jail and charged. They were released later due to Illinois Safety Act Requirements, and officials explain the offenses charged were not detainable.
The investigation is continuing as another suspect is being sought after. If one has information about the incident, they are asked to call the sheriff’s office at 618-262-4186 or to submit a tip through the Wabash County Sheriff app.
