TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Indiana State Police (ISP) are reminding drivers to be extra cautious as more farm equipment will be on the roadways as planting season approaches.
State police say drivers should stay alert, maintain a safe distance and use extreme caution when passing.
ISP Sergeant Matt Ames says they always advise drivers to not be distracted while behind the wheel, especially during planting season as farm equipment may be moving significantly slower than the posted speed limit.
Sergeant Ames also advises drivers to not pass farm equipment at certain points of the roadway.
” One other thing that we do want to reiterate to motorists out there traveling. Make sure if you know you’re coming up to an intersection or you’re coming up to a railroad crossing, make sure that when you’re within like 100 feet of it, please don’t be passing at that time cause that’s going to be kind of a blind area. You don’t know whether or not there is a train coming, you don’t know whether or not there is another vehicle already in that intersection and getting ready to make a turn to go the opposite direction and we would, unfortunately, have an accident,” said Sergeant Ames.
He also encourages all farmers to make their slow-moving emblems are visible and to make sure all their flashing lights are working properly.
