FARMERSBURG, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— Two Illinois agencies are warning drivers to “move over or get pulled over”.
Illinois State Police and the Illinois Department of Transportation are raising awareness about the “Move Over Law” also known as “Scott’s Law,” in Illinois. State police said already this year there have been five “move over” crashes in Illinois resulting in four troopers injured. The law requires drivers to move over and slow down when approaching a stationary emergency vehicle with its emergency lights activated.
If it’s unsafe or impossible to change lanes, drivers must slow down and proceed with caution, and be prepared to stop if necessary. The fine for a move-over law violation in Illinois is between $250 and $10,000. Police said if the violation results in an injury or death, it’s a felony and driving privileges could be suspended for up to two years.
