VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) โ Tuesday morning, county commissioners discussed future projects during their regular meeting.
West Central Indiana Partnership gave a presentation showcasing their plans throughout the Wabash Valley.
Also, Vigo County Commissioner Chris Switzer discussed the contract between RQAW and the commissioners.
RQAW is a consultant organization, that was chosen by a committee of officials in the criminal justice system in Vigo County, to assist in infrastructure projects.
This project will be changing the correctional facility, located at First and Ohio Street, to a treatment facility.
Switzer said residents will benefit more from getting personal help than serving jail time.
โThe jail is such a double-edged swordโ, Switzer said. โThere are certainly criminals that need to be housed in a jail facility, but there are certainly people who suffer from things that have led them to certain situations in their life that they need some help. Sitting in a jail cell does not provide that help. We want to have programs in place, which we have come upon in the Vigo County Jail now, to get them out of that scenario and out of community corrections. This treatment facility is so they can really get back to their families and back to a healthy lifestyle.โ
Switzer said the original plan was, by now, to have appeared before the city council to make a financial request. However, with the current legislative session taking place, the project is at a standstill.
