CLAY COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO-WAWV) โ A stolen vehicle chase, results in an injured officer and the individual being pursued was shot by authorities. The incident happened earlier this evening in Clay County along State Road 42.
Sgt. Matt Ames of the Indiana State Police says an off-duty officer, observed a stolen U-Haul.
Clay County Sheriffs deputies located the vehicle, it took off and a pursuit started. The vehicle went down a private drive and a female jumped out. The individual drove down a lane and authorities attempted stop sticks. Then the U-Haul ran into three Clay County Sheriffs vehicles.
Ames says the Terre Haute SRT team arrived, and they attempted negotiation for at least an hour. Then the individual drove toward ISP troopers, and one trooper received injuries, which Ames described as non-life-threatening.
Ames says officers then shot at the vehicle, striking the individual, who was transported to a hospital in Indianapolis.
โThis is a situation where it turned ugly, unfortunately. We attempted a negotiation for an hour, hour and a half with this individual. If you have to negotiate with the police, just [make] the right decision and just give yourself up. Weโre not here to hurt anybody,โ Ames said.
We will have more information as it becomes available.
