VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Vigo County Council has approved the mandate for court employee pay raises on Wednesday night at a special county council meeting.
The mandate was first issued by Vigo County judges back in October 2024. At the time, the previous county council gave major pushback, and ultimately denying the initial mandate.
On Wednesday night at the Vigo County Annex, four of the seven county council members approved of all 31 court employees to receive an increase in salaries.
“I truly think that both sides have won,” said David Thompson, President of Vigo County Council. “Their employees are happy and at the end of the day, that’s what you want. I think there will be a better relationship than there has been in the past.”
The council will increase the 2025 base salaries by a total of $199,000. This includes court reporters, adminstrators, receptionist, and office managers are all entitled for raises.
On the other side, if the county council would have denied the mandate on Wednesday, the settlement would’ve had been taken to the Indiana Supreme Court.
“If we would’ve taken this to the Indiana Supreme Court, the cost would have been astronomical. The cost we’ve incurred now is minimal compared to what it could have been,” said Thompson.
Moving forward, with the settlement being approved, the next steps for council will be making the appropriations which will be presented at a Vigo County Council meeting most likely in June.
