MEROM, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Thursday, Sullivan Elementary students took the classroom outdoors to get a breath of fresh air.
Every year, students get a chance to come to the Merom Conference Center and enjoy the great outdoors.
“There is a lot of things you can’t learn in a classroom, and over here in nature’s classroom, we learned a lot of life skills. Our students have done amazing crafts, they climbed up the tower, they’ve done a lot they never thought they could do,” said Mia Moody, 4th Grade Teacher at Sullivan Elementary.
Moody said this is a chance for students to get a breath of fresh air.
“It’s just a great experience for them, I wish all schools could come and have this chance because a lot of students don’t even get the chance to get out of Sullivan. So, to get out here in the county and be in the fresh air, it is a wonderful opportunity,” said Moody.
She added that many kids struggle being in a classroom, but this change of scenery lets them learn hands-on.
“This is a place for them to grow, and I can see them thrive being outside doing those hands-on activities, and that makes it all worthwhile,” said Moody.
“Usually in classrooms you have to look at pictures and learn stuff from indoors, but when you’re outside you can actually get out and go learn and look at stuff and it’s really fun,” said Samantha Everhart, 4th Grader at Sullivan Elementary.
One theme nature’s classroom looks to teach these students is the importance of leadership and teamwork.
“It helps you in life. Having to do teamwork and having a lot of fun, and working in groups,” said Aleyah Whitt, 4th Grader at Sullivan Elementary.
Moody said this field trip is something some students never forget.
“I have seniors all the time tell me all the time, ‘I wish I could go back it was so much fun,’ they tell me that was their favorite field trip of the year,” said Moody.
Thursday’s field trip is also a celebration for the end of the school year, as kids will be going on summer break May 23.
