VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Feeding America has released its yearly report on local food insecurity data across the nation.
The study includes the most up-to-date data on the issue. It found that food insecurity in the Wabash Valley has increased for the second year in a row,
Child Food Insecurity in West Central Indiana is some of the highest in the state, and Vigo County ranks as one of the highest.
“It really gives us on-the-ground current numbers of what our neighbors are experiencing that can back up what we’re seeing in our pantries and our soup kitchens and our different distributions. It helps us to make decisions on where we should be, you know, funneling money, where we can make the biggest impact for our community,” said Jessica Murphy, Development Manager for Catholic Charities Terre Haute.
The numbers in this report reflect the stats from 2023. It is assumed that current numbers are likely higher due to inflation and reduced government funding and cuts to programs, such as the sun bucks summer feeding program.
