TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The city of Terre Haute welcomed nearly one-thousand runners to LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course this weekend.
Varsity and JV teams from across the state ran at today’s course. Today’s event kicked off the first race of the season for many cross-country teams.
Karen Dyer, executive director of the Terre Haute Convention and Visitors Bureau, mentioned high school races are a great way for runners to run on a course that holds national races.
Today’s event drew an estimated of 3,000 people from across the state.
“They are here at the beginning of their season and the opening of our season and what’s wonderful about the course is that you get to see the whole course at one time, so it’s open and the parents get to run around and see their kids at this turn or that turn and they can see how hard they’re working and they really are working really hard to kick the season off,” said Dyer.
She also mentioned the course always draws a lot of tourists and will draw even more, as the local course will host multiple NCAA races in the future.
