TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Hundreds came out to the Vigo County Fairgrounds, tasting all different kinds of chili and supporting “chili for the kids”.
“Some with a little bit of sweet. Some with a little bit of spice. So far, the sheet metal workers I think had the hottest chili so far,” said community member William Penrod.
Many people came out to try a variety of chili on Saturday in Terre Haute and one particular booth was very popular, the chefs from Terre Haute South Vigo High School’s culinary class. All of the food was homemade by the class, and their chili was halfway gone by 1pm.
“Beans, there’s chili, tomato paste. It’s pretty good. Everyone said it’s pretty good,” said culinary student Mauricia Lucas.
“And there’s worcestershire sauce and on a garish on it we have sweet potato corn bread and also honey butter,” said culinary student, Kameria Watler.
“And it’s all homemade. It’s all from scratch,” said Lucas.
“And also, there’s bacon in the chili,” said Watler.
These south students say they were happy to see so many people try their chili. All funds raised go to scholarships to Vigo County students like Lucas and Watler.
One local man says he enjoyed sampling chili’s and feels inspired to try to bring his own chili to this event next year.
Absolutely My wife was talking about maybe doing a little chili next year. We have our own little recipe. We’ll see what happens,” said Penrod.
An event perfect for all ages and a chance for the community to come together. Make sure you check it out next year.
