BRIDGETON, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — This was building was once, Racoon Township Schools, built back in 1925.
Steve Herzog’s grandmother went to school at this very building many years ago. He said he and all of his cousins also went to school here and because of that connection, he has dreamed of owning this building.
In 1986, Herzog and his wife, got the keys to the building, on the anniversary of their marriage.
“We have the old pictures that’s inside with all the trophies. The pictures are from 1924 to 1960, and all the trophies are still in here and so are the banners from the baseball team,” said Steve Herzog, co-owner of the building.
The couple not only resides in the building, but they’ve also made it a space for the community to walk through time. There are signatures from past students who visited the building, on a chalk board and old yearbooks, along with the year they attended.
“So, it’s not just been a building. It’s been a home. So, we’ve cherished it for that. So, the town, at first, nobody wanted to take over it. So, when we bought it, we had good bones and there was just no way we could let the town, tear it down,” said Allison Herzog, Steve’s wife, and co-owner.
They said anyone can visit this building anytime and learn the history. You can also visit during this year’s Covered Bridge Festival. They will have collectables, vendors, live music, a glass blower, food, pony rides, and more.
