TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— The community is getting in the school spirit for this week’s ISU Homecoming and Terre Haute Mayor Brandon Sakbun, as well as ISU’s president and the director of athletics, headed to Wabash Avenue to see who showed the most spirit.
The mayor and university heads went from business to business, judging who had decorated their windows with the best sycamore support. Multiple companies participated, including Wise Pies, Saratoga, Century 21, and more. This is just one of several parts of homecoming week, including the trike race on Friday and the parade Saturday at 9 a.m. before the game at 1 p.m.
“It’s a huge week for our community and for Indiana State University,” said Mayor Sakbun. “The trike race is Friday at 4:00 p.m. That’s going to be a fun time. I’m fairly certain I can beat the President, Michael Goddard, so that’s going to be a good time. The parade is 9:00 a.m. on Saturday and will cap that off with a Sycamore win starting 1:00 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.”
Director of Athletics Nathan Christensen spoke about how the city and the college benefit from working together. He believes the college and community make each other better.
“It’s about Terre Haute and the University coming together to really celebrate this time,” said Christensen. “Because certainly it’s about our current students on our campus, but it’s also about our community, and alums, and our donors, and really with this window decorating contest it’s great to see local businesses supporting Indiana State University, but having that school spirit because homecoming is all about that school spirit, and having that mindset of hey we’re all in this we’re all in this together.”
The winner of the window decorating contest will receive an ISU Athletics package to celebrate their school spirit with their employees.
