TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Terre Haute City Council heard about an effort to reduce traffic accidents in Terre Haute.
The final draft of the “Safety Action Plan” was presented to the Terre Haute City Council. The city is developing and finalizing a Safety Action Plan in order to improve road safety in Terre Haute. That way, it can apply for federal grants.
The city planner said a safety plan is important for other reasons as well.
“Eliminate the crashes, fatality, and serious injury. It’s important to study the traffic analysis, the traffic data, the crash data. Understand the community needs,” said Terre Haute City Planner, Maitri Tesai.
The traffic data looks at the flow of one way and two-way roads, notable high injury areas, survey results, and much more. One survey showed only 29% of respondents said they feel safe biking in Terre Haute.
The plan focuses on how to create safer conditions, for cyclists, pedestrians, motorcycle riders, and more.
“It gives local government the opportunity to apply for federal funding to fix some of those problems that we all know are there. Whether it’s you know, widening a turn lane like we did at 13th and Wabash or adding additional stop signs, or even taking stop signs away,” said Terre Haute Mayor Brandon Sakbun.
Community input is welcome, as the plan continues to be discussed. The deadline for it to be complete is October 24th.
