WEST TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— A Vigo County man’s death was listed as a homicide after dying four days after an altercation that took place on October 8.
According to the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to an altercation on October 8 on St. Mary’s Road in West Terre Haute. When they arrived, deputies said they were directed to an area where an injured man was allegedly located, later identified as 73-year-old Robert Gibson.
Deputies stated that Gibson was alert and informed deputies that earlier he’d been speaking with 57-year-old Thomas Sebring of Vigo County, when a third man, later identified as 70-year-old Larry Norris of Vigo County, approached. According to deputies, Gibson stated that Norris approached the two men, appearing irritated, and soon after, a verbal altercation ensued that turned physically violent.
Deputies said Gibson was treated at the scene by rescue personnel but refused and signed himself for no further treatment. Deputies stated that Gibson did, however, have to be taken to Union Hospital the following day and died from his injuries three days later, on October 12. A press release from the Vigo County Coroner’s Office stated an autopsy was performed two days later, on October 14. Deputies stated that preliminary results listed the manner of death as homicide. The press release also stated that Gibson died from “Complications of Blunt Force Closed Head Injury”.
Norris had also left the scene that night but was later located and taken to Regional Hospital before being transferred to Indianapolis for further treatment. Norris is under medical care but is being charged with aggravated battery, possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, and additional pending criminal charges at the Vigo County Prosecutor’s Office.
