TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Saturday night, the Terre Haute Convention Center held its largest dinner party yet, at around 700 people and it completely sold out.
This event was the Eugene V. Debs Foundation Awards. This foundation is a nonprofit that awards individuals who promote social justice.
Saturday, United States Senator Bernie Sanders received this award. Sanders is the longest serving independent member of Congress in United States history.
Everyone at the event enjoyed dinner, music, and waited in anticipation to hear Sanders speak. He said Debs stood up for working families and the labor union and Sanders wants to instill those values throughout the United States.
“Debs frightened ruling class when he was alive and his ideas still frighten the ruling class,” said Sanders during his speech.
Saturday night, Terre Haute heard from not only Sanders, but also united states representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, or AOC. She has been touring with Sanders all over the United States.
