WABASH VALLEY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A major book distributer, Baker and Taylor, has gone out of business, and many libraries are struggling to fill that void.
Brazil Public Library and Clinton Public Library about how they plan to meet that need. This news about the major bookseller was abrupt. Sarah Trover, Director of the Brazil Public Library said the seller was intended to be purchased by another company, but that the deal fell through.
Libraries could purchase books at a lower price, get multiple copies, automatically receive entire new release collections, get labels, and overall aids in streamlining distribution. Now, they have to turn toward other companies like amazon, Barnes and Noble, Walmart, and more.
“It’s going to be interesting to see what retailer will kind of take up that position because I mean there’s competitors, but not in the same way. Even at our library that’s smaller, I mean we receive a box of books from them every day,” said Trover.
Due to switching gears to other resources, these libraries will have books coming in at a slower rate.
“A lot of the other booksellers are smaller, and they don’t have the capacity and right now, all the local libraries are rushing to them, so we’re just finding that there is a little bit of a backlog,” said Ashley Wolfe, Assistant Director at Clinton Public Library
Though Wolfe said they encountered problems with Baker and Taylor about a year ago, so they already turned to using smaller booksellers. Both libraries ask that the community has patience in this new journey.
