I remember the call.
“Hey, would you be willing to stand in a lake in October and let a mermaid eat Dorito’s dust off your fingers?”
Of course I said YES!
By my estimates, this commercial that was made for a Doritos contest to get a fan made ad into the Super Bowl lineup has been viewed nearly 100 million times. It was featured in an article about catfish noodling on the Field and Stream website, stolen by hundreds of viral video hopefuls across various streaming video components and not a week goes by without someone sending me a link to something featuring the ad.
It was a great ride…but I never got a cent. Or a free bag of Doritos (outside of the ones provided by the prop department). I wouldn’t trade it for the world. My brush with viral success. All these years later, I still look back and laugh whenever I happen to catch it on some website.
