TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – 2nd Update: A crash report indicates the driver in the car vs. motorcycle crash Sunday in Terre Haute that seriously injured a motorcyclist ran a red light before the crash.
According to Terre Haute Police, the crash occurred at 5:20 p.m. at the intersection of S. 13th Street and Hulman Drive. Investigating officers found a Chevy Traverse driven by a 19-year-old Terre Haute man was headed southbound on S. 13th St. and failed to stop for a red light.
As the SUV entered the intersection, a motorcycle driven by a 62-year-old Terre Haute man was headed eastbound on Hulman Drive and crashed into the passenger side of the Traverse.
Multiple witnesses and dashcam video confirmed that the Traverse had entered the intersection while disregarding a red light, while the motorcycle had a green light.
One witness was the motorcycle driver’s wife who had been following him in a second vehicle. A responding THPD officer administered an AED and chest compressions to the injured man until paramedics arrived on scene.
The driver of the motorcycle was taken to Regional Hospital with serious injuries, and would later be taken to Ascension St. Vincent Hospital Indianapolis for surgery.
1st Update: Terre Haute Police report the intersection of 13th and Hulman is back open and “normal traffic has resumed.”
Original: 13th Street in Terre Haute is closed at the intersection with Hulman Street due to crash involving a car and a motorcycle.
In a statement on social media, THPD said, “Please avoid the area of the 13th and Hulman intersection. This intersection is completely shut down as THPD Officers are investigating a car vs motorcycle accident with serious bodily injury.”
The statement continued, “Crash reconstructionists are responding to the scene and the intersection is expected to be closed for 3-4 hours. No other details of this investigation are being released at this time. We will update the community when the intersection reopens.”
