TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Wednesday morning, we had the chance to speak with a local Vietnam veteran who got to go on an unforgettable trip on the Indy Honor Flight.
The Indy Honor Flight transports WWII, Korea, and Vietnam veterans to see the memorials built in their honor in Washington, D.C. for free. Vietnam veteran James McDonald said he couldn’t believe all the small details that went into making this trip unique.
“There were people and volunteers there to greet us along with other people in the terminal clapping for us and thanking us,” said McDonald. “They even had the airport’s fire department spraying arching water over top of the plane as it came into park.”
When these veterans land in Washington D.C., they are then taken to the Tomb of the Unknown Solider along with the Vietnam and Korean War memorials. McDonald said seeing the names of all the soldiers who lost their life during the war he fought in was very humbling.
“It was just really humbling to walk by the Vietnam Memorial,” said McDonald. “It is really sad to see all of those names of men and women that did not come back.”
McDonald said that this was such a moving experience and recommends it to all veterans.
“It was just a humbling experience, an emotional experience, and I can’t thank them enough for what they accomplished,” said McDonald. “This program is really, really great.”
