WABASH VALLEY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The presents are unwrapped, and the Christmas lights are coming down.
If you’re ready to say goodbye to your live Christmas tree there are some good options here in the Wabash Valley.
For the first time ever, Vigo County residents can take their trees to Vigo County Solid Waste Management.
The facility recycles almost everything, such as plastic, cardboard, and electronics.
This year, their executive director Karrum Nasser said they’re adding a new category to that list.
“One of the things that we’re doing, starting in 2025, is we’re starting a compost facility, where people will be able to take their yard waste”, Nasser said. “One of the things we’re starting off with is taking live Christmas trees.”
There is no charge to have your tree recycled by Vigo County Waste Management, however there are a few guidelines.
“They need to be from Vigo County residents only”, Nasser said. “They need to not have any decorations on them, no tinsels, just the tree itself. If you get it to our facility here on 3230 East Haythorne Avenue, we’ll help you unload it. Then we’ll end up taking it down to our yard waste disposal site.”
If you are not a Vigo County resident, Exotic Feline Rescue Center in Clay County is also taking trees.
Their head keeper, Rebecca Stevenson, says these will not be disposed, but rather gifted to the animals.
“Big cats actually have a terrible sense of smell, they go by eyesight and hearing in order to be able to hunt”, Stevenson said. “When you give them something with a very strong scent, like a Christmas tree, you’re going to watch the cats rub all over it to try and get the scent of the tree off of the tree, and their scent on the tree. It’s a really great form of enrichment for all of the animals.”
Both Vigo County Waste Management and Exotic Feline Rescue Center ask that all decorations be removed.
The rescue center allows drop-offs at any time, at any of their gates.
The waste management center is accepting drop-offs until January 11th, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., Monday-Friday. They are also accepting on the first two Saturdays of January.
