TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Dave Chapman has been Superintendent of South Vermillion School Corporation for almost two decades.
In January, he announced his retirement.
Although Chapman has been in public education for his entire career, he said he is ready for the next chapter.
“After 43 years in public education and a growing family, with grandkids and all, I felt that this was a good time to step down”, Chapman said. “Serving South Vermillion for 17 years as a superintendent, I felt it may be time for a new change.”
The Board of Trustees has approved Assistant Superintendent Micah Williams for the role.
Williams began his career as a middle school teacher at South Vermillion in 2011 and said his ties to the community played the biggest part in wanting the position.
“Over the years, I’ve thought about moving to the superintendent role”, Williams said. “I thought this would be a great place to do it. I know the community, I’ve been involved in the community, and I know the people really well here.”
As an assistant superintendent, Williams said he focused on the financial side of the school corporation. He believes those skills will be important in the future.
“We just finished up an audit”, Williams said. “Going through that process and thinking about how I’m going to navigate that, as a superintendent, and who to put in what roles. With the state of education, I think we’re constantly looking to do more with less.”
Williams said being around South Vermillion Schools for so long, he already has his sights set on future plans.
“There are definitely things in my head that I want to do within the first couple months, within the first year, and then within the first 3 to 5 years”, Williams said. “As I move forward in this process, I’m sure that list will get longer, but its satisfying to check things off and see where the vision and mission of your corporation leads you.”
Williams will take over for Superintendent Chapman at the end of this school year, effective July 1st.
