FARMERSBURG, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— Duke Energy is taking a unique approach to clearing vegetation threatening their power lines.
According to a news release, Duke Energy started clearing vegetation Wednesday that had overgrown along several of their high-voltage power lines throughout west central Indiana. Duke Energy says they do this to ensure safe and reliable service for the thousands or customers in the area.
Due to the lines spanning so many communities and in some rough and remote terrain, a special crew has been brought in utilizing a helicopter with an aerial saw. This crew will be eliminating the overgrowth along many power line corridors. These corridors will be Washington to Edwardsport, Sullivan to West Terre Haute, Prairie City to Harrison, Harrison to Russellville, Crawfordsville to Rosedale, and finally Montezuma to Cayuga.
Work is expected to continue until late March depending on weather conditions. Federal regulations require work like this to be done to avoid interference with safe operation and to maintain the lines. All citizens along the corridors have been notified and areas where the helicopter will be are marked and flagged in advance.
