TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — As a kid, many of us wanted to be our favorite book or movie character, and Friday, some local elementary students were able to live out that dream.
For the past few weeks, 5th grade students at Sugar Creek Elementary have been reading about tall tales. To show how much they’ve learned, they ended the week by putting down the books and getting to play their favorite character.
Jennifer Price, a 5th grade teacher at Sugar Creek, said each student got to pick one of the ten characters they’ve been studying and play the role of a wax figure that comes to life.
“They’ve dressed like them, they have a prop, and they also have written a speech pretending to be that person”, Price said. “When their button is pressed, they come to life as their tall tales character.”
Family members of the students walked around the gym, pushing the red button on each student’s poster, which brought the character into action.
Nathan Lindsey, a 5th grade student at Sugar Creek, said the experience made the learning come alive.
“I just like going through the experience”, Lindsey said. “It’s really fun getting to learn all about your character, then you actually get to be your character and show it to other people.”
Lindsey said this style of interactive learning helped him learn the characters more than sitting in the classroom.
“This is actually a lot better than sitting and standing with your teacher talking because it involves you”, Lindsey said. “If you raise your hand and your teacher calls on one person, that’s just one. This is everybody getting involved. It’s just a really fun experience.”
This is the second of three big events that Sugar Creek Elementary has been able to put on through a grant from the Vigo County Education Foundation.
