TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO) — UPDATE: According to a news release from the Terre Haute Regional Airport, the plane that crashed was a WWII-era plane that was attempting to land at the airport when it crashed. It was a part of a group of three planes, but the only one with an incident. As it came in for its landing, it came up short of the runway and breached the perimeter fence before flipping over.
The three planes that came from Cincinnati were at the airport to meet up with fellow participants in the TBM reunion in Peru, Illinois. The pilot was flown to Indianapolis via lifeline, but the co-pilot is alright after only sustaining minor injuries.
UPDATE: WTWO has just spoken with THPD Public Information Officer Justin Sears for more information on what occurred.
According to Sears, airport authorities were alerted shortly before 2 p.m. about the crash on the property of the Terre Haute Regional Airport. airport staff immediately provided aid while several local agencies came to provide support.
The pilot and co-pilot have sustained injuries. One of the two is currently being treated at a local hospital, while another had to be lifelined to Indianapolis for further aid. The THPD asks the public to please avoid the area during this time, and that they are preparing the scene for the FAA to come in and take over the investigation with the help of local agencies.
UPDATE: Craig Maschino, Executive Director of Terre Haute Regional Airport, confirmed that a plane crash this afternoon has temporarily closed the airport.
“Our immediate concern is saving anyone on the plane. That is really our only concern right now,” Maschino told WTWO.
At this time the runway is closed until further notice.
The area will be quarantined, according to Maschino, to preserve evidence for the National Transportation Safety Board that is on its way to the accident scene.
