UPDATE 9:14 p.m. — New information has been provided by the Terre Haute Police Department regarding the standoff earlier today.
According to a Facebook post from THPD, shortly after 5 p.m., officers attempted to make a traffic stop on a vehicle that had committed several traffic violations. The driver did not stop, and a pursuit began that led officers through downtown south on 13th Street before ending up in a parking lot by the intersection of Canal Street and Margaret Avenue.
The suspect voluntarily came to a stop, and officers attempted a second time to conduct a traffic stop. The suspect not only refused to leave the vehicle but also threatened to shoot and kill officers if they approached the vehicle.
Out of caution, THPD contacted the SWAT team, who responded with armored vehicles to contain the situation, officials said in a news release. THPD officers attempted to engage in negotiations with the suspect before hostage negotiators took over. After hours of negotiation, the man committed suicide.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing, and WTWO will update the story if more information becomes available. The police ask the public to avoid the area at this time.
