TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Do you think you have what it takes to drive a school bus? Well, the Vigo County School Corporation is giving you that chance this weekend.
These school buses may look scary to drive, but the Supervisor of Transportation for the Vigo County School Corporation, Carol Lewis, said they will teach you everything you need to know at their “Arrive and Drive” event.
“This gives community members a chance to come out and see what it’s really like to drive a bus, and if they really like it… We offer training as well, free training offered by the Vigo County School Corporation to get your CDL,” said Lewis.
She added that the event is also a perfect chance for the school corporation to fill vacant spots in its staff.
“We are currently short about 11 bus drivers. We have posted routes in the office currently, and we are hoping to have all of those filled by next year. The summer is a great time for training cause you have all summer to get your training done and have you ready for the first day of school next year,” said Lewis.
Lewis said a school bus driver’s job isn’t just getting kids to school on time.
“Bus drivers hear a lot of things about home life. Students tell them all kinds of things. They have their requirements just like a teacher does. Sometimes if they hear something that they think may be abusive or something going on, their required to report that,” said Lewis.
At the end of the day, Lewis said it’s a very fulfilling job.
“It’s very fulfilling, they will get on the bus and hug their drivers sometimes… Bus drivers get to know their students very well. They’re the first face they see in the morning, and a good morning and a smile can make someone’s day, especially if they are having a bad one,” said Lewis.
The Arrive and Drive event will be held on Saturday, May 30, at the Vigo County School Corporation’s Transportation Bus Lot at 3250 Maple Ave, from 9 a.m. to Noon.
