GREENE COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Tuesday morning, the first Greene County Commissioners meeting was held since severe weather damaged many parts of the county.
Residents were given the opportunity to ask questions and share their opinions on the relief efforts.
Some said it didn’t feel as though county officials had communication with the community and people didn’t know anything about what was going on or where to go.
Others begged for information regarding the county reaching out to disaster relief organizations.
One resident questioned whether the county had an emergency plan at all.
County Commissioners replied that Emergency Management Director, Roger Axe, was responsible for the plans, however he was not in attendance at the meeting.
We reached out to Axe. He said he doesn’t regularly attend commissioner meetings and was hard at work on disaster relief efforts Tuesday morning.
Also at the meeting, Sheriff George Dallaire praised first responders and said the immediate action by the county was a success.
“What I saw was the best of the best from 99% of the people involved”, Dallaire said. “Our first responders, fire departments, volunteer fire departments, Linton fire went above and beyond. All of them, they didn’t quit.”
County Commissioner Nathan Abrams continued to put the focus on the state and federal government, saying that help takes time.
“I just found out this week that the federal government increased the threshold for FEMA, so I don’t know if we are even going to qualify”, Abrams said. “I know it’s extremely devastating and very, very frustrating, but I promise you we are doing all we can.”
At the end of the meeting, both residents and county officials agreed they needed to improve communication between the public and local leaders.
