VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — 116 golfers came together at Rea Park on Friday afternoon for the 33rd annual “Fore” the Kids Golf Scramble.
The event is put on by the Vigo County Education Foundation with Executive Director Jane Nichols.
Each team had a registration fee of $500 that, Nichols said, will go to the school system.
“I do think it’s the biggest golf outing in Terre Haute now”, Nichols said. “It’s just a fun way to raise money for the kids. We have so many loyal golfers that are out here in this heat, all because they really care about our schools, about our students, about our children.”
Nichols said the money will help fill the gaps in things that aren’t provided by the school budget.
“Funds raised today will support extended day tutoring, summer enrichment programs, classroom grants that enrich every content area”, Nichols said. “Whether its technology education programs or literacy enrichment, math enrichment. Also, the Battle of the Books and Math Madness. Many things are made possible by everybody coming out and participating.”
One of those loyal golfers is Tom Thomas. He said he’s been playing in the event for at least 20 years, as many members of his family are involved in local education.
“It started with my dad when he was a teacher and a coach back in the 70s and 80s, then my wife became the executive director before Jane, so I feel obligated to support the school system”, Thomas said.
Thomas said he’s seen, firsthand, the things this tournament can provide.
“It’s great”, Thomas said. “They do wonderful things for the teachers, students, and the school corporation in general. It’s a privilege to play.”
1st and 2nd place teams got a cash prize, while 3rd place got free golf balls. Many of the holes also had prizes on them for things like a hole-in-one and longest drive and putt.
