TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Local unions came out to the Terre Haute Labor Day parade with hopes to inspire and educate the younger generations.
Children dove for candy, snatching up any in sight, and for 3-year-old Charlotte Chilton, she loved every second.
“What did you like today?” asked our reporter.
“Candy!” said Chilton.
“And how much candy did you get?” asked our reporter.
“A lot!” said Chilton.
People began lining the streets, picking the perfect spot to sit, an hour before the parade began.
For some, this parade is more than candy; it’s a tradition. Miss Vigo County first runner-up has been participating in this parade for six years, in support of her grandparents in the IBEW union.
“To see all the little kids smiling. I love passing out candy, and I love just seeing everyone smile and having a great time and joining together,” said Aubrey Dean, Miss Vigo County first runner-up.
Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 157 had over twelve hundred applications and brought in over 200 apprentices this year. Business manager Troy Bennett said they are still growing and still need more workers.
“To get the kids to realize that you don’t necessarily have to go to college. We pay for the college tuition. It’s a very good start. It’s a great pathway to a really good career,” said Bennett.
Here’s a little fun fact: most of these unions are over a hundred years old. Each works hard and is an important part of the community we recognize on Labor Day.
