VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Vigo County School Board held its normally scheduled meeting Monday night.
After last week’s fiery back and forth between the Vigo County Council and Vigo County School Corporation, you may have expected to hear more discussion over an ordinance passed by the county council not to help with school corporation with upgrades to its buildings, but the topic was barley brought up.
It is still up in the air whether or not the ordinance was valid.
The Vigo County School Board talked about a lot at its meeting but said very little about last week’s ordinance passed by the Vigo County Council. The ordinance said the Vigo County Council will not help the school corporation pay for upgrades to its buildings or establish an oversight board unless voters approve the council helping out through a voter referendum.
Here’s what Superintendent Chris Himsel had to say Monday night on the matter.
“We continue to be hopeful that there’s a chance for us to be able to partner. We’re thankful for the people who created that conversation. We have not been informed that that conversation is not going to continue to occur,” said Himsel.
The superintendent’s short comment was echoed by at least one school board member as well.
Instead, many other topics dominated the school board meeting. They talked about the school corporation’s budget.
“We do expect our tax rate to go down. obviously, that won’t be finalized until the DLGF does that, but we have every reason to believe that our tax rates will be lowered this coming year as what it has been in the past,” said Himsel.
The board also praised Terre Haute North and South High School marching bands for qualifying for the state finals. This Saturday, the schools will be competing in the Scholastic “A” state finals in Indianapolis. Superintendent Himsel says he is proud of the student’s dedication and hours of practice.
“All those efforts that they’ve putting in since the season began actually last spring, but officially in July and have nightly been out practicing through heat. Lots of humidity. This past weekend, probably did some practicing and dodging of rain drops and so forth as they get their shows ready and perfected,” said Himsel.
Terre Haute North and South will be performing in the first half of the Competition. Any information on times is be found on the competition’s website.
