TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — For the first time, the Terre Haute Moose Lodge has donated 23 stuffed animals to the Terre Haute Fire Department.
This donation of stuffed animals seeks to provide comfort to children when a fire or major incident occurs. The Terre Haute Moose Lodge’s mission is to serve their community and they decided to show a little piece of love to local children by giving them something to hold on to on what may be the worst day of their life.
“Sometimes this may be the only calming thing that they might have. In case of situation where they’ve lost everything, this would be something they could keep,” Carol Mowbray, Chaplain of the Terre Haute Moose Lodge.
“And comfort, to give them comfort,” said Dena Samm, a member of the Terre Haute Moose Lodge.
The Terre Haute Fire Department consistently keeps stuffed animals on hand for just these situations.
“A lot of times when we arrive, there’s an emergency right, so kids see a lot of unknown faces, they see fireman and they know we call firefighters when there is an emergency. So, their anxiety levels are already high and so anything we can do to calm that child down and what better way than to pass out a stuffy,” said Nick Arnold, THFD Public Information Officer Captain.
The Terre Haute Fire Department said this donation of “Tommy Moose” stuffed animals will make a great addition to their collection.
The Moose Lodge said they hope to continue these donations in the future.
